Householders urged to wrap up pipes for winter
scottish Water has put together a checklist of things to do to protect your pipes during cold snaps.
Their experts warn that different temperatures call for different degrees of protection to save pipes from bursting after an icy spell.
When the temperature is above six degrees, they advise that householders should still have their heating on at a low setting, particularly in flats where some rooms may in which the mains pipe suppleis neighbouring flats.
Appoint someone to keep any eye on things when the property is going to be empty and make sure you leave a key with someone you can trust. If this is not a neighbour, be sure they can contact the keyholder.
If the property is going to be empty for some time, turn off the water suppply and drain the system.
Be sure you know where the stop valves are.
In temperatures lower than five degrees centigrade, make sure the water tank is well-lagged with an insulating jacket.
Don’t place loft insulation under the tank, is the advice from the water company, as this stops heat from the rooms below helping to keep the tank warm.
Toilet cisterns, water tanks or pipes in exposed places or unheated outbuildings should be insulated. Better still, drain them for winter if you’re not using them.
In zero temperatures and below, dripping water increases the risk of freezing, so have any leaks at taps or valves repaired as soon as you discover them.
