Art roadshow visits Killearn

ARTISTIC inspiration arrived at Killearn Primary School last Thursday when the Tesco Bank Art Competition visited the school.
The flagship school programme, which is run in partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland, is on the road for the first time in the competition’s nine years.
Entrants come from all over Scotland, from Orkney to Edinburgh, and the competition aims to raise awareness of the National Collection and teach children how to paint, use pastels and collage
Primary five and six pupils took part in workshops which were based on a painting by Scottish artist John Duncan called St Bride which colourfully depicts two angels carrying the white robed St Bride across the sea. The lively seascape with seabirds and crashing waves reflects Duncan’s fascination with the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Iona.
Isabel Tempest, depute headteacher at Killearn Primary School, said: “We were delighted to welcome the roadshow team to Killearn - the pupils enjoyed a very special creative day.”
Councillor Graham Lambie, Stirling Council’s portfolio holder for education, said: “This is a great way to get children involved in creative arts as well as introducing them to Scottish artists and providing inspiration to them using landscapes and imagery that are in familiar surroundings.”
Linda McLelland, playfair co-ordinator at National Galleries of Scotland, said: “The Tesco Bank Art Competition for School workshops have been devised with the Curriculum for Excellence in mind and provide and inspirational starting point for the competition. We are grateful to Tesco Bank for their support in allowing us to take the competition out into communities which has clear benefits.”
Adele Mills, community investment manager at Tesco Bank, added: “We are delighted to support the art competition and roadshow and we hope it will give more children across the country the opportunity to take part in the workshops. This competition, along with our range of football and reading is part of our ongoing commitment to benefitting communities in Scotland.”
The 53 winning entries to the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools will be exhibited at the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery this summer and the exhibition will tour to several locations across Scotland.
