WEST lost their top-of-the-table spot to Selkirk with a 24-10 defeat and must now look for the Borders side to lose their final match on Saturday if they want to go up as champions.
It's all to play for at the weekend as the three top sides in SHE Premier League 2 battle it out for the two promotion places.

It couldn't be tighter with Selkirk on 80 points, West on 79 and Biggar on 76.

Saturday's games see Selkirk travelling to Biggar while West face bottom-of-the-table Hillhead/Jordanhill in their crucial game at Burnbrae.

Selkirk deserved Saturday's win as they were the hungrier side in the tough enthralling Borders clash.

West were on the back foot right from the kick off and soon had to defend desperately on their own line. They were only saved from a sure try by a knock-on.

The ball was cleared but a missed catch at the line out by West caught them in the wrong defensive position and Selkirk took advantage with the ball moving quickly through the hands for their centre David Cassidy to score in the West corner. Cassidy converted.

Selkirk again pressed and Cassidy got space to have a pop at a drop goal. This rebounded off the posts into the hands of No 10 Gavin Craig who, standing offside, was delighted when his run in to the line was allowed by referee Malcolm Changling. Cassidy again converted to stretch their lead to 14 points.

Stung into action West used their more powerful scrum to some effect. A penalty to the visitors was put to touch just short of the Selkirk line and the take and drive set up.

Stout defence by Selkirk however frustrated West and the ball was moved out, only to end up in touch at the other side. Further pressure on Selkirk's line resulted in the ball being cleared. Back in the West half again, the set piece played to West's advantage and No 8 Graham Fisken went on a rampaging run gaining 20m up the park.

The ball was recycled quickly and Gordon Bulloch made further gain before popping the ball to O'Donnell who drew his man out and moved the ball back inside to Perrett who used all of his 6ft 7in frame to dive over the line. With Conor Davis converting West were back in the game.

Another penalty to West was put to touch and the opportunity to level the score arose.

West forwards drove again and again at the home line but the crucial score would not come and the ball was cleared.

It was the home side who drew a further three points ahead with another penalty from Cassidy's boot taking them into the turnaround 17-7 in front.

Selkirk's tactics in the second half were to protect their lead, which they did admirably. Two runs up the wing by West captain Andrew Park were halted by good cover defence.

A glimpse of parity was achieved when substitute stand-off Fraser Sinclair stroked a long range penalty through the posts to take the score to 17-10 but try as they might West could not breach the home defence for the equaliser.

Before full time Cassidy put the nail in West's coffin. He carved through the defence to score and then put his personal tally up to 19 points when he converted.

West will be looking for good support in their final home game which kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.

WEST 2nd XV guaranteed their promotion to the top 2nd XV league with a crushing victory over Murrayfield Wanderers. They are to be congratulated for the excellent campaign they have fought this season.

The 3rd XV scored 75 points without reply against local rivals Lenzie and continue their march to the top of their league.
