WEST of Scotland are back with the big boys and kick off the new rugby season on Saturday with a derby match against Glasgow Hawks.
It's a cracking start to the season for the Burnbrae side who moved up to the Premier 1 League as Division 2 champions in a nail-biting finale.
There's plenty of exciting rugby in prospect as West face the tough challenge of the Division 1 sides, and Herald readers can play a major part in supporting the local team.

Admission price is normally £10 but we're offering readers a voucher for EVERY league match that will gain them them half price entry — just £5 for a great afternoon's entertainment at Burnbrae.

It promises to be an exciting season for West who have been building up their fitness with friendlies against Hawks, Gala and Hillhead/Jordanhill.

As a Premier 1 club they now have a closer association with the professional side of the game, with some of Glasgow Warriors' squad allocated to them when they are not involved with their own club.
Richie Vernon, Jon Welsh, Richie Gray, Colin Gray, Colin Gregor, Andrew Henderson and John Beattie (junior) have been allocated, although most will be rarely available.

Club coach John Beattie will rely on the young squad from last season to do most of the hard work, but he also has the advantage of attracting some of the local Scottish Academy of Rugby players.
Jamie Hunter and Peter Horne, both academy members, will join West born and bred academy player Robert Harley at the club.

The various additions during the close season have bolstered John's squad and this will help to combat injuries during the season.
An exciting year is ahead for West with the 2nd XV also gaining promotion to the top 2nd XV league.

Vice president Angus Steel, who is in charge of senior rugby at the club, said: "We want to stabilise our position in the various leagues.
"We also have some very good young players coming through from our junior section which bodes well for the future and I am keen that the under-18 squad does well this season to give continuity of development for our young lads. Any local young player in that age group will be made most welcome at the club."

Club president Gordon Cairns looked towards the long-term future at West and said: "We are mired in the development process still and it is difficult to look too far into the future at the moment, but if things go as we hope, we want to move to a new facility as a strong and vibrant local club.

"The club is very keen that local people support what we are trying to do.

"We welcome all local residents to our games.

"There are bar meals available in the clubhouse before the games, hot pies etc during the games, and everybody is welcome to use the clubhouse after the games.

"Come along and support the red and yellow on Saturday against the Hawks – and bring the weans! You'll enjoy it."

Make sure you get this week's Herald for half-price admission voucher.
