IT'S been a long road but West returned to the top flight SHE Premier 1 as table-topping champions thanks to a spectacular dying minutes bonus try for a 24-3 victory.
West had to get the winning bonus point — at least four tries — against bottom of the division Hillhead/Jordanhill to go up as league champions because of the previous week's defeat against Selkirk.
But with Biggar snapping at the heels of both Selkirk and West, the game between Biggar and Selkirk down at Hartreemill in Biggar held as much interest as the one at Burnbrae.
What added further spice to the day was that Hillhead/Jordanhill had to win at Burnbrae to give them any chance of avoiding relegation to the lower league.
So the field was set for a nerve-racking emotional rollercoaster of a day.
And those nerves showed in the first half when Hillhead/Jordanhill attacked with such fervour that it was obvious they would fight to the last.
But it was West who scored on 15 minutes with a kick and chase by flying winger Ben Wright who touched down in the corner. The conversion was missed and no more points were added in this half.
On the turnaround West moved up a couple of gears and played to their strengths with the forwards standing up to the mark and keeping the ball in hand.
Although Hillhead got the first points with a penalty by their full back Twaddle, West started to pile on the pressure and were soon rewarded when a penalty kick to touch resulted in a drive over try with the touch down by Gordon Bulloch.
Good ball retention by the visitors saw increasing frustration from the home support as the other two tries needed couldn't be scored unless they had the ball.
This impasse was halted when a driving scrum in the visitors' half gave a half chance which captain Andrew Park took with a trademark wavy run clear through the middle to score under the posts – converted by replacement stand off Conor Davis.
This set the scene for an amazing finale. Could West get the fourth try and bonus point in the dying minutes of the game?
The spectators knew, although the players didn't, that Selkirk were winning but had not gained a bonus point.
Supporters were willing referee John Steele to keep his whistle in his pocket as the minutes ticked by.
Finally a penalty kicked to the visitors' corner gave the forwards a splendid opportunity. A fine catch by Jan Vos and drive to the line was halted but Calum Morrison peeled off the back and a glimpse of the line was all he needed. Try, bonus point and Championship to West.
It was a triple whammy with the 2nd XV also winning their league Championship and the 3rd XV still clear at the top of the 3rd XV league.
The champagne flowed and the celebrations went on late into the night.
Norman Douglas, the SRU Premier 2 Council representative, had the Championship Cup down at Biggar and had to travel up to West to present the trophy to club captain Andrew Park.
Despite the euphoria of celebration all at West admitted admiration for Selkirk RFC who had almost pipped them at the post with two difficult wins in their final games.
