PARTICK THISTLE'S assistant boss Gerry Britton has insisted that trialist Simon Lynch will continue to play in the side's pre-season friendlies before any decision is made over his future with the Firhilll side.
The hitman produced an impressive performance in Saturday's opening pre-season game against Blyth Spartans, scoring two goals in a 3-1 victory.

However, the Jags number two said: "Simon did really well on Saturday, but we were looking more at how the players were performing rather than with the overall result.

"He will get another opportunity in the next few games to prove himself to the manager, and after that a decision will be made by manager Ian McCall regarding his contract."

Britton, who took charge of Thistle in Northumberland on Saturday, was pleased with the team's performance, especially with the addition of new players Paul Paton and Ian Maxwell.

He said: "The team are performing well together and the double training sessions we've had have definitely helped.

"Paul and Ian have settled in really well and they seem to be in tune with the rest of the players."

However, Simon Donnelly did suffer an injury against the Conference North side, and was taken off in the 20th minute after suffering from a dead leg.

Britton said: "Simon has been getting treatment over the last few days. It is nothing too serious but we did not want to take any chances, which is why we took him off."

The Jags face a double fixture on Thursday when boss McCall takes charge of a squad visiting Somerset Park to take on Ayr United, and Britton returns with a squad to his old club Stranraer.

Notably missing from the line-ups for both matches will be striker Liam Buchanan, who is still waiting to make a return to action.

Buchanan has been struggling to overcome a persistent groin injury, but Britton insists he is still making progress.

He said: "We don't want to put a date on when Liam is likely to return as he is still not fully recovered.

"He is doing well but he has not taken part in full training sessions yet."

And with the start of the season approaching, Britton admits the Jags are still looking for new players.

He said: "Although there is no one else taking part in trials, we are still looking to bring people in."

Thistle fans will be looking forward to Thursday (July 17) when the club opens its doors for the annual pre-season meet the players' event.

McCall and his coaches will be putting the first team squad through their paces on the Firhill pitch from 6pm.

Once the training session is over, McCall, Britton, coach John Henry and the squad will make their way to the Aitken Suite for a question and answer session, before spending time signing autographs and chatting to supporters.

Entry will be free, and the West Stand will be open from 5.30pm.

Thistle will face Brechin City at Glebe Park on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

They then send a team to Forthbank Stadium to take on Stirling Albion on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
