A GIFTED young athlete looks set for a glittering track career following an outstanding performance at a prestigious event

Calum Innes, from Deepdene Road, Westerton, raced to victory in the ScottishPower Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 10.88 seconds.

The superb performance at Grangemouth means the 17-year-old is now ranked as the second fastest under-20 runner in Scotland over 100 metres, and is also the fifth fastest in the country at senior level over the distance.

Calum, a former pupil at Boclair Academy, was competing against some of the top young athletes from throughout Scotland at the event.
The win came as a surprise to Calum, who said he considers himself as more of a hurdler than a sprinter.

He said: "I didn't think I'd win because I consider myself to be more of a sprint hurdler than a straight sprinter.

"However, I'm really chuffed to bits. I thought my training partner was going to beat me and before the race I felt nervous, so to win was just amazing."

"I train between five and six times a week, just doing short sprints of 50 or 60 metres at a time."

Calum is currently waiting on his exam results and is hoping to study electrical engineering at Stow College in October.

He will be hoping to maintain his excellent form tomorrow (Friday), when he travels to Sweden to compete in the Gothenburg Youth Games.
Calum will take part in a sprint hurdle event, and is aiming to run 14.80 seconds, the qualifying time for this year's Commonwealth Youth Games in India.

He said: "In order to qualify for the Games, athletes have to run 14.80 seconds at two separate competitions.

"I have already done it once, so this will my best opportunity to qualify."

Also at Grangemouth, fellow Bearsden athlete Sarah Gray (15), from Bearsden Academy, won silver in the high jump.
And there was also success for Boclair Academy pupil Andrew McFarlane (14), also from Bearsden, who picked up a bronze medal in the high jump
