WINNER of Thursday's crucial Bearsden South by-election is LibDem Ashay Ghai.
He defeated Rachel Higgins for the Scottish Conservative and Unionists, Fiona Grace McLeod for the Scottish National Party and Manjinder Shergill for the Labour and Co-operative Party.

The by-election followed the surprise resignation of Conservative Councillor Simon Hutchison.

Councillor Hutchison, a solicitor, was elected in May 2007 and was given the convenorship of the powerful planning committee when the coalition Labour/Tory administration was formed.

He made his resignation on the grounds that he was finding it too difficult to combine his work as a solicitor with his council duties.

The count was held in Bearsden Burgh Hall this morning.

See this week's Milngavie and Bearsden Herald for a full report.
