CONCERN over safety at the recently-installed roundabout near Canniesburn Toll is such that the Association of British Drivers has now joined the call for its removal.
.
MSP Des McNulty says he has had countless representations from drivers who have experienced near miss encounters at the locus and he also wants action taken to improve safety.

The MSP claims complaints to the roads department are being ignored by East Dunbartonshire Council and said: "I have first hand experience of the dangers of the poor layout which makes the busy approach to Canniesburn extremely dangerous."

Chairman of the Scottish branch of the Association of British Drivers, Peter Spinney of Mugdock, has for several months been requesting action on the roundabout which he says is an accident waiting to happen and explained:

"Approaches to the roads authority by the Association of British Drivers have ben rejected out of hand, in spite of the fact that the director of roads admits to an error.

"Accordingly we have advised that we are appealing the decision to the ultimate authority — Transport Scotland.
"The so called 'improvement' at the junction is totally unnecessary and there is seriously sub-standard interliane visibility, making it thoroughly dangerous."

And in response to requests from the public, the Association has organised a petition they intend to lodge with council leader Rhondda Geekie requesting the swift installation of "a suitable traffic signal" as soon as possible.

A spokesman for East Dunbartonshire Council said: "The new roundabout was built to improve road safety at a site where several head-on accidents had happened over the past few years. People shared our concerns and supported change.

"The changes to the junction were designed in compliance with all relevant guidelines and it has been scrutinised through three stages of the formal road safety audit process. This audit process is conducted by a group comprising an Independent Road Safety auditor, Strathclyde Traffic Management Police and relevant officers of the council.
"We have had dialogue with Mr Spinney and respect his views although we do not support them.

"We welcome input from communities and are always happy to listen. Any petition will be acknowledged and considered fully by the council."
The petition is available for signature at Hillfoot Service Station, Milngavie Bookshop and the Iron Chef in Mugdock Road.
