Bearsden man Gordon McKirdy (33) is going to cycle 1,000 miles from Glasgow to London with his friend Steve Hunt (46) while they pull a 6ft high piggy bank the size of an original Mini Cooper to raise money for Cancer Research.
The pair, who have already raised £80,000 by running a marathon a month and taking part in the 100 mile Himalaya challenge last year, hope to raise £60,000 when they set off from George Square on Sunday.

Gordon said: "The pig is built to last — we'll crumble way before he does!

"We'll be collecting money along the way and would encourage local people, young and old, to come along, maybe dressed as a pig, and support us by donating some cash.

"We also need children to draw pictures of pigs and suggest names for the porker which has yet to be christened."

The dynamic pair will be following a set route through more then 50 towns and cities and are planning to stop for an hour or so in each town along the way.

The pair are clearly gluttons for punishment because the piggy bank weighs 40 kilos and they hope to complete the cycle in just three weeks. This means they will cycle for around nine hours a day, clocking up an average of 40 miles a day.

Gordon's gran, from Hardgate, died from cancer just last week, which makes this event even more poignant for him.
