OPPONENTS of the proposals for a monster new Tesco superstore in Milngavie gathered at the proposed location on Saturday to raise public awareness of the scale of the proposals.
Tesco propose the demolition of the present store, its replacement with a two-storey car park and the building of a new two-storey superstore in the current car park with moving walkways joining the buildings.
Eve Gilmore, who formed the We Like M
ilngavie campaign group, organised the demonstration on Saturday which attracted around 100 protestors.
She told the Herald: "I was delighted at the turnout without any pre-publicity other than the group e-mailing contacts. We chose to demonstrate at Woodburn Way as we have been amazed how many people had no idea of the huge scale of the development or that it was proposed so close to the main road.
"It would really be a complete blot on the landscape of Milngavie, rising eight metres above Woodburn Way with funnel type masts on top of that.
"I have long been a Tesco shopper and quite happy for them to improve the existing store, but the grotesque style of building proposed is not in keeping with the surroundings of Gavin's Mill."
MSPs Des McNulty and Gil Paterson and MP Jo Swinson joined the protestors.
Mr McNulty said: "We have to question why Tesco are proposing an even bigger store in Milngavie than the one they are building in Maryhill.
"A refurbishment of the existing store or a modest expansion would be acceptable but we don't want a monster sized store or obtrusive signage.
"The additional floor space which it is planned to give over to non-food items could put local businesses in the precinct at risk.
"The public feel the conservation character of Milngavie would be adversely affected. The We Like Milngavie members are to be congratulated for getting so many people out on a Saturday morning to make their views known.
"Let us hope Tesco are listening and that they will adapt their plans to take account."
Tesco say they want to improve the shopping experience in Milngavie and a spokesman said: "Over the last year we have consulted with the local community, altering our plans in line with their comments and suggestions.
"Our proposals would be a major investment in Milngavie, bringing increased choice and creating 250 local jobs."
