POLICE will launch a three-month crackdown on motorists in Bearsden and Milngavie next week.
The road safety campaign begins on Tuesday, April 1, with community police officers from Milngavie being joined by road traffic cops.

They will set up road checks at different locations within Milngavie and Bearsden in a bid to catch offending dri
vers.

Police will target drivers using mobile phones, drivers and passengers failing to use their seatbelts and drink drivers.

They will also use this period to ensure that drivers obey speed limits.
Des Clarke, community and safety officer at Milngavie police office, said: "This campaign has been organised in an effort to create safer roads and raise public awareness of the dangers involved in irresponsible driver behaviour.

"If partaking in unacceptable behaviour within the area of Milngavie and Bearsden then there is a high probability of being detected by the police and prosecuted.

"The intention of this action plan is to create safer roads within the areas of Milngavie and Bearsden by conveying the importance of responsible behaviour by the area's motorists.

"Statistics prove that the use of mobile phones while driving is consistently a contributory factor in road accidents.

"If you are using a mobile while driving, you are four times more likely to have a crash. Despite continual and ongoing advertisement regarding these dangers a core percentage of drivers are still failing to comply with the legislation.

"It is also alarming that one in nine road deaths in Scotland are now alcohol related and we will be making full use of a road side breathalyser during this campaign."

The campaign runs until July 1.
