BEARSDEN'S name could be dropped as a constituency area under new Boundary Commission proposals.
And politicians, community organisations and the public are all fighting to persuade the commission to revise its proposal for the re-drawing of boundaries — the terms of which would create a "Milngavie and Bishopbriggs" constituency.

With 28,000 residents, Bearsden will be the largest town in the new constituency and this week all parties on East Dunbartonshire Council were set to respond to the commission in time for the deadline of today (Friday) that the new constituency name should be "Bearsden, Milngavie and Bishopbriggs".

A report before members of Thursday's policy and resources committee recommended that the chief executive write to the commission advising that it was the recommendation of the five political parties that Bearsden should be included in the renamed constituency.

Bearsden North Community Council chairman Keith Small believes the proposals puts emphasis on creating constituencies of the same population size — rather than considering the links between local communities.

A small part of Bearsden actually falls within the present Clydebank and Milngavie constituency and Mr Small wrote to the commission saying: "We are a small part of Bearsden, the remainder of the town is in the Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency.

"This has caused some confusion and local people do not feel any great affinity with Clydebank. We would rather be in the same area as the rest of Bearsden and have more in common with Milngavie."

Mr Small suggests it would make sense to have East Dunbartonshire as one constituencey, but added: "If the present proposals are accepted then we feel very strongly that the name Bearsden must be included in the constituency title. Bearsden after all has twice the population of Milngavie and we would suggest the name should be Bearsden, Milngavie and Bishopbriggs."

MP Jo Swinson is also urging the commission to include the name Bearsden and told the Herald: "I was surprised to say the least when I saw the name of the proposed new constituency. When Milngavie, Bishopbriggs and Bearsden will be the three major towns in the constituency why name it after only two of them?

"I will add the names of all local residents who contact me to support the campaign when I make my submission, for the closing date of March 14."

People can add their support to the call at campaigns.libdems.org.uk/savebearsdenname or by telephoning Ms Swinson's office on 0141 762 2209.

MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden, David Whitton, recently wrote to 7,000 constituents, but not with specific regard to adding Bearsden to the constituency name, rather simply inviting them to comment on the consultation in general.
